Adelina “Lena” Ortiz
Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, Adelina “Lena” Ortiz, 101, of Santa Fe, peacefully embraced by the arms of Jesus, passed away October 17th. Born April 2, 1916 in Chili, Northern NM, to Eliseo and Dolores Maestas she lived a simple life farming with her 4 siblings and parents. While the U.S. faced the Great Depression and WWII, Adelina met the love of her life and husband of 57 years, Tony Ortiz, during the Santa Fe Fiestas. They built their life and family on Camino Monte Sol, then moved to the Agua Fria Village and became parishioners of San Isidro Church. Accompanied with their children, Bernadette and Michael, they devotedly participated with the annual Fiestas and attended weekly mass. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and telenovelas. She looked forward to her weekly trips to the Senior Center, where she passionately played Bingo and spent time with her friends. At home, she played card games with her family and “never lost”.
She lived through 18 presidential terms and witnessed the world around her transform from horse drawn carriages to space travel. As her family grew to 5 generations so did her strong heart. She had a keen mind and feisty spirit. Her love for God, her family-especially her daughter-was endless up until her last days.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, son Michael, grandson Richard Ortiz, son-in-law Henry Padilla, and siblings Abel and Charlie Maestas, Carolina and Ramon Urban, Delia and Manuel Romero.
