Allyn Claire (Allie) Lowenstein died on January 20, 2022 following a short illness. One hundred-one years old, she was born March 7, 1920 in Nevada, a state she emotionally embraced throughout her life.
A child of the Depression, Allie married at seventeen. Leading into WWII, she had four children in five years (all eventual college graduates), spending several years in a house without indoor bathroom plumbing. She served her community during the ‘50s as a 4-H leader helping rural kids - including her two sons - learn and perfect sewing techniques. She enjoyed picnics; many ended with an obligatory watermelon rind fight or hide and seek among the bushes and trees. She held her family together following her husband’s injury in an industrial accident, taking on less than desirable jobs.
At the age of 41, Allie entered college without a high school degree. Graduating, she taught elementary school children in Nevada, California, and Texas for the next 20 years, twice earning Teacher of the Year distinction. She was noted for her originality, compassion, and humor and remained in thoughtful touch with some of her students until her final years. Allie was a voracious reader, instilling her love of reading in her children and taking them seven miles to the local town library to check out books. She was noted for her love and skill at growing all manner of flowering plants and for her enjoyment of foreign travel.
Allyn Lowenstein is survived by her children and their spouses; Anita and Clair Adams, Thermopolis, WY; Colleen and Bart Olinger, Los Alamos, NM; Roddy Cox and Paul Richter, Portland, OR; Jim and Molly Cox, Apache Junction, AZ; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
