Arnold Freduss Walter, a longtime resident of Los Alamos, passed on Friday November 19, 2021 with family members at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents Nellie and Esmond Walter, and by his sister Evelyn Shoop.

Arnold was born on July 23, 1931 in Lead, South Dakota. He graduated from Black Hills State Teachers College and Dunwoody College. Arnold worked as an Architect and as a Draftsman, and he retired from AMOCO / British Petroleum in Denver, CO.

After college, Arnold served in the United States Armed Forces, Army, in the 1950’s and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Corporal after almost two years of service. He received a Good Conduct Metal and a National Defense Service Metal. Arnold served with the Field Artillery at the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center in Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1952.

While in the service of the Army, Arnold, and members of his Artillery Test Unit received individual letters of appreciation for their efforts for the firing of the first atomic artillery projectile by the Artillery Test Unit on 25 May 1953 at the Nevada Proving Ground.

Arnold served as an Elder at Northglenn Christian Church for many years.

Arnold is survived by his wife Frances Walter, daughters Janet DeAnda, Julie Wagner, Elaine Fleming, and son David Walter. He is also survived by grandchildren McCoy DeAnda, Michelle Furr, Amanda Fleming, and Allison Wagner, and by great-grandchild John David Furr.

A memorial service is scheduled to be held for Arnold at 12:45 PM on Tuesday December 21, 2021 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery (501 N Guadalupe St., Santa Fe, NM 87501).  Reception following the service at the Church of Christ of Los Alamos, 2323 Diamond Dr. Los Alamos, NM 87544.
