Arthur Bachrach

d. December 19, 2011

The family of Arthur J. Bachrach (Art) is sad to announce his passing on Monday, December 19th, 2011. Art began his life in Taos in 1984 when he and his wife Susan opened Moby Dickens Bookshop. After wrapping up their previous lives back East and finalizing Arts retirement with the Navy, they moved for good to Taos in 1987. Art was very active in Taos civic organizations, served on the boards of several museums, wrote a few books and just loved living in Taos. Art loved his dogs and cats and early on worked hard for the Stray Hearts Animal Shelter as its director. You could almost always find him in his office at Moby Dickens where he loved to read and talk and visit with his many good friends in the community. Art served in the US Army during WWII, earned his doctorate in psychology and was a professor at the University of Virginia when he met his wife Susan Clement. They were married in 1954 and had two sons, John and Hunter. He taught at ASU in Tempe, AZ from 1961 through 1969. He then became the Director of the US Naval Medical Research Institutes Behavioral Sciences Dept. in Bethesda, MD and served there until he retired in 1987. Art passed away at his home with his family by his side on Monday morning. He will always be in the hearts of his family and many friends in Taos and around the world. Art is survived by his wife Susan, his two sons John and Hunter and his two daughters in law, Rae and Charlotte. Arts request was that there be no memorial service and that instead of flowers, well-wishers may send a donation to the Stray Hearts Animal shelter in his name. Art was known for his great sense of humor and on the night before his passing said to his family these words: Im cramming for finals. RIP Art, well miss you.
