Celina Lucero

1950 — January 17, 2019

Celina Sally Trujillo Lucero, of Costilla, NM, left this world suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Sally was born to the late Antonio Ben and Margarita Maggie Trujillo in 1950 in Jaroso, CO. Ben and Maggie raised Sally in Costilla, NM. She attended Costilla Elementary and Questa High School. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Education and a Master’s Degree in Business from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. Sally also earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science (K-12) from Texas Women’s University in Denton, TX. Sally was passionate about teaching and taught students in grades kindergarten through high school throughout her career spanning 31 ½ years. Sally’s first year of teaching was at Sanford High School in Sanford, CO. The rest of her years of service were with the Questa Independent Schools teaching at Costilla Elementary, Cerro Elementary, Questa Elementary, Questa Middle School and Questa High School. She served as district librarian for several years. Although she taught students of all ages, her passion was working with high schoolers. Sally demonstrated this by sponsoring many activities and classes including the National Honor and Junior Honor Societies and yearbook for several years. She taught business classes and was librarian at Questa High School. Sally was an active member in both her school and parish communities. She worked with the Sacred Heart Church in Costilla, NM and the St. Anthony Parish in Questa, NM for over 40 years. She served with her husband Leroy as mayordomos for the Sacred Heart Church. She was even involved with the renovations made to the church. Again, she followed her calling to work with children in catechism in the parish. Sally prepared and helped children receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for many years at the Sacred Heart Church. She and her husband Leroy later helped children prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Most recently, she was serving as the Director of Religious Education for the St. Anthony’s Parish. She also supported her husband in his duties as deacon in the parish since 2003. She received many awards, honors and recognitions for her years of service in the schools and with the church. Most recently, she was recognized with the St. Francis of Assisi Award with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Sally’s partner in life was her husband Leroy Lucero. They were married in September 16, 1972 at the Sacred Heart Church in Costilla, NM. They began their married life in Denver, Colorado for a couple of years and then moved back to Costilla, NM where they built their life together. They were married for 46 years and had three daughters and 2 grandchildren who they loved very much. She always told them they were her whole life and she showed them this every day. She loved visiting and seeing new places with her husband and family, reading and teaching. Despite her hectic schedule, family was what made her happy. Although she lost her sisters, dad, grandparents, and uncle at very young ages in her life, she never forgot them and talked about them often. These losses lead her to love and treasure her family unconditionally. Sally was a loving and supportive wife to her husband Leroy. She gave everything she had in her to raise her daughters LeAnn, Shelena and Shantel. She delighted in being a loving grandmother to Mia and Maddox. Sally is survived by her husband, Leroy, three daughters, LeAnn (Chris), Shelena and Shantel; two grandchildren, Mia and Maddox.
