Channing Ray, having survived her husband Dorsey for some years, and continuing her travels as she had for decades, elected to take one last trip on her own terms, as she tended to do. Her last breath was in her home with friends by her side, surrounded by delightful items she gathered from around the world, with a gin and tonic in her hand.
As one of her earliest friends said “she was my audacious and shockingly humorous guide to life. Her loyalty, deadpan delivery, love of beauty, tenderness, and endless style all became part of my world.” Recently, we recall her everyday date with Jeopardy and her beloved rescued dachshunds.
She was a curious and observant traveler, just recently planning her next trip.
For the last thirty years or so, she traveled extensively in Africa, taking a special interest in and supporting Tongabezi Trust School, Zambia for underprivileged local children. At home in Santa Fe, she avidly supported the Espanola Humane Society through volunteerism and fundraising.
Friends and family will miss this intrepid woman for the mark she made on those she loved was permanent. Channing did not wish for a memorial and in lieu of flowers, she would be honored with donations to https://www.espanolahumane.org.
