Charles "Corky" Hawk

Charles Carter Hawk “Corky”, age 77, passed away on February 3, 2022. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado and raised in Denver.   He is survived by his beloved wife Yolanda Romero-Hawk, brother, Terry Hawk (Fran), nephew, Matt, niece, Katie, best friends Mickey Blake, Jack Barratt, Don Telsley and many more.  He was preceded in death by his parents Norene and Richard Carter Hawk and first wife Mary Ann Hawk.  Corky earned his bachelor’s degree at Yale University and his Juris Doctor at the University of Michigan in 1969.  He served as Attorney and Counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States. He practiced labor law in Michigan, retired and moved to Taos, NM where he designed and built his home. He was a fine and gifted carpenter who furnished his home with beautiful Spanish Colonial furniture which he made. He also was a fine artist as indicated by his beautiful portraits and drawings. Corky was an athlete who was on the Yale ice hockey team.  In Michigan he played baseball and coached a children’s baseball team.  In Taos, he continued to ice skate, ski and cycle.  He was a gentle, generous, kind and unassuming man who was extremely intelligent with many interests and talents yet so humble that he avoided credit for all he did for his community and church. He assisted the Acequias Associations with his expertise. He was an historian and archeologist. He belonged to the Taos Historical Society, Taos Archeology Society, Anza Society and Old Spanish Trail Associations. His passion was to explore, identify, walk and map old roads and trails and write extensive and detailed journals of his findings which he shared with other archeologists. He received numerous awards both local and state for historic preservation including that for this outstanding contribution to preservation for New Mexico’s cultural heritage.  His Current Project was working to preserve the old Duran Molino (grist mill).  Our beloved Corky with be greatly missed.
