Dr. Charles Noel Statham, PhD. died Thursday 11 May 2017 at home. A native Coloradan Chuck grew up in Estes Park working for the family business, hardware store, skiing and hiking. After graduating high school, Chuck went on to gain a B.A. from University of Northern Colorado, a M.S. and two PhDs. from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Toxicology and Pharmacology. From there he began doing research at the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles. In 1982 he moved to Germany to work for the US Army as the head of the Toxicology Section. This eventually led to his becoming in 1994 the Scientific Advisor and Laboratory Sciences’ Laboratory and Technical Director for the Public Health Command Region - Europe (under various command titles). During Chuck’s 38 years as a Department of Defense - Army Civilian, he received numerous citations and awards including Commanders Award for Civilian Service, Department of the Army Achievement Metal, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service. His impact on his staff and the laboratory accreditations were his proudest achievements. At his retirement a wing of the newly built laboratory was dedicated Dr. Charles N. Statham, and a flag presented that had flown over Landstuhl Medical Hospital.
Throughout Chuck pursued a variety of personal passions bringing his enthusiasm and dedication to each: chief among them was travelling, Volksmarching, racing with the Porsche Club of America, Germany Region, skiing, running, biking and nature photography. Dr. Statham retired to Taos in 2014, having fallen in love with the beauty of the mountains, the light and the people. His family as well as his many far-flung friends and colleagues will miss him.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Alexandrine Bartlett, his sister Barbara Good, her son and daughter-in-law Dr. Christopher and Joanne Good, his sister Susie Doughty and husband Marlon, their three sons: Mitchell and wife Teresa Doughty, Cameron and wife Shanna Doughty, Reed and wife Katie Doughty as well as his grand nieces and nephews: Zachary, Zander, Zoey, Blaise, Ember, Acacia, Judah, Micah, Caleb, Sam and Izzy. His parents Richard and Florence Statham, and his niece Stephanie Good predeceased Chuck.
