Charles W. Atwell (a/k/a Chuck Atwell) was born in Matheson, Colorado on September 21, 1928, to Donald A. and Gladys Atwell, and passed away September 29, 2020, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 92. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Atwell, his youngest son, Kevin Michael Atwell, and grandson Ryan Schelble. He is survived by his children: Charlanne Cooper (John), Charles Atwell (Diane), Steven Atwell, (Cherry), and Lorin Schelble. Grandchildren, Jenny Lively, Charlie Atwell, Crystal Atwell, Vanessa Atwell, Kendra Padilla, Tara Carpenter, (Bobby), Mercedes May, (Nathanael); eleven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
During World War II, Chuck served in the US Navy, participating in Project Crossroads, testing the atomic bomb in the Pacific. After leaving the Navy, he began his retailing career in Colorado and later moved to Santa Fe in 1954 to manage the Gambles Store and later the Tempo Store. In 1970 he started his career in real estate from which he never retired.
Chuck was active in many community organizations, including the Santa Fe Rotary Club, Realtors Association of New Mexico, Twenty Thirty Club, Montezuma Lodge #1, Elks Club, Santa Fe Country Club, Board chairman for the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. In his later years, his favorite group was the senior citizens club at the Bull Ring.
Chuck had a passion for life, traveling abroad, sailing, skiing on water and snow, racing stock cars and motorcycles, restoring antique cars, golfing, and collecting art. In his last months of life, he was planning several building projects.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Atwell Jr., Steven Atwell, John Cooper, Denez Lopez, and Sam Pick.
