Dale L. Johnson passed away at Holy Cross Hospital on June 19, 2016 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carmen Acosta, his daughter, Heidi, and his son, Paul. He was preceded in death by his son, Jay. Dale was born in Sanish, North Dakota in 1929 to father Rudolph Kenneth Johnson and mother Mildred Louise Christensen. He graduated from the Benson County Agricultural High School in Maddock, North Dakota, earned a B.A. from the University of North Dakota, and a Master’s degree and a PhD from the University of Kansas. Dale was a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Houston. He designed and carried out many research projects of lasting impact, including the Parent Child Development Centers, self-led therapy groups at the Veterans Administration Hospital, investigations into mental illness in indigenous communities, and much more. He served as President of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and as President of the World Schizophrenia Association. He was a visiting professor for one year at the University of Bergen, Norway under a Fullbright appointment. He and Carmen retired to Taos, New Mexico, and they have been active members of the Taos Archaeological Society. Dale was keenly proud of all his students’ accomplishments, a beloved father and husband and a friend to all. Arrangements by Rivera Family Funeral Home.
