David M. Jones "Spike"

d. January 26, 2025

David M. Jones “Spike”, 78, a resident of Los Alamos New Mexico, passed away on January 26, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Spike graduated from Los Alamos High School and attended New Mexico State University (NMSU), where he was a member of the Aggie bowling team. He was also in the first graduating class to hold their graduation ceremony in the NMSU Pan American Center. Shortly after graduating from college, he reported for duty with the United States Army, initially serving with the 82nd Airborne and later becoming an Army Ranger, serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment and spent a tour of duty in Viet Nam.

After serving in the Army, Spike returned to Los Alamos and became an active member of the community. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Elks Lodge.

His passion was playing golf. Spike was ready to play golf and enjoy his many golfing buddies wherever and whenever he could, even while battling cancer. He was one of the founders of the Los Alamos Junior Golf Association and Booster Club, dedicating endless time to supporting junior golfers and growing the game.

He was a devoted NMSU Aggie fan and frequently attended sporting events, including watching his son participate in the NMSU Professional Golf Management Program (PGM), playing tournaments throughout the region. Spike shared the thrill of horse racing with his family and owned several racehorses. He enjoyed spending time at the lake and always came home with a funny (or embellished) fishing story.

Spike was preceded in death by his parents, Weems and Jewel Jones; his brother Robert Jones; his in-laws Bob and Ilah Crook; and brother-in-law Drew Fuller.

He is survived by his wife Donna; son Cale Jones (Dana); grandchildren Liam and Avery Jones; sister Judy Jones-Fuller; sisters-in law Linda Spirio (Carmen) and Becky Crook; nephew Steve Mullins (Tonya); niece Sarah Fuller (Shane) and several great nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Rivera Funeral Home in Espanola on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 11:00am, burial at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 1:00pm, followed by a celebration of life at the Los Alamos Elks Lodge for family and friends.

Spike was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. His quick wit and colorful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Los Alamos Junior Golf Association (5255 Quemazon, Los Alamos, NM 87544).
