David C. Huerta

David C. Huerta, 61, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Sunday February 4, 2024. 

David was born in Las Cruces, NM to Efren Huerta and Mary Huerta. The seventh of eight sons, he had a passion for sports, faith, family, and learning. He attended college at both New Mexico State University and The University of New Mexico. He served the community by becoming a paramedic with the Espanola Hospital while he concurrently worked as a security guard. David started his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1984 as a technician and dedicated thirty-nine years before his retirement. At LANL he led many projects, received numerous awards, and broke many barriers. He returned to work with TechSource shortly after his retirement to continue his dedication to the field and pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation. 

Above all his accomplishments and achievements, David was most proud of his family; his three children, and six grandchildren. He was often seen attending sporting events, birthday parties, archery competitions, hunting and fishing trips, princess tea parties and participating in countless other grandfather duties.  Those who knew him, can attest to his great story telling and conversations. David had an infectious laugh, quick wit, and one of a kind grin. His love and compassion were unmeasured. His opportunistic attitude was contagious, and he was often the first one to accept a challenge. David also loved to replicate his mother’s cooking recipes to share with friends and family. 

David is preceded in death by his father Efren Huerta and his mother Mary Huerta, brother Junior Huerta, and Eddie Huerta. He is survived by his daughter Valerie Huerta, son Benjamin Huerta, and daughter Theresa Toomey (Jack Toomey). His grandchildren Eric David Giron (Andrea Barela), Darren Giron, Katherine Huerta, Nicholas Toomey, Mateo Toomey, and Eleanor Toomey. Brothers Rudy Huerta (Olga Huerta), Tony Huerta (Sookie Huerta), Ronnie Huerta (Francine Huerta), Ernest “Neto” Huerta (Nicole Huerta), Tommy Huerta and many other relatives and friends. David’s passion was serving the community throughout his careers but was happiest spending time with his family “making memories” and telling stories. He will be greatly missed by all.

Memorial Service will take place at Rivera Funeral Home in Espanola on Thursday February 15, 2024, at 5:30 pm with the Rosary to follow at 6:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held on Friday February 16, 2024, at 10:00 am at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
