David Harold Hultin

David Hultin passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021 at his home in Santa Fe, NM. He was 75 years old—even though his Facebook page said he was only 70. Born on June 14, 1945 to Harold and Ruth Hultin in Milford, MA, David was a beachcombing scallywag with a love for a good book and long meaningful friendships. His sense of humor was both cerebral and irreverent. David was a masterclass storyteller, who never let the facts get in the way of a good story. After graduating from Wachusett Regional High School, he went on to study at the University of Massachusetts for his undergraduate and University of Maryland for his graduate degrees, though it was his autodidactic pursuits of literature, history, music, gourmet cooking, and barbeque that contributed to his most memorable pastimes. His intense charisma was magnetic, always drawing a crowd with his outlandish stories that merged both fact and fiction. After graduation, David landed his first job as a high school teacher in Maryland, the irony of which is not lost on any of us. Those poor unsuspecting teens…non-the-less he taught for many years before moving on but not before inspiring his charges with his Socratic approach to education. Subsequently, David held different jobs in publishing, sales, and mortgage banking before his retirement. To this day his LinkedIn account shows him as the Chief Reprobate at Winding Road Adventures. David was active all his life with many hobbies including travelling, climbing, backpacking, running, fishing, sailboat racing, motorcycling, hunting, skiing, smoked meats, firearms, booze, cigars, and beautiful women—all of which he enjoyed until his passing. David loved music, especially Jimmy Buffet, and even lived on a sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay for several years. He was irascible and kind, relentlessly logical, and exceedingly generous. He was a conundrum of sorts, a cross between Jack Reacher and Huck Finn and whose spirit animal was Owl from the Adventures of Pooh. He was an avid reader and a published author. David was a great friend to many and was known for his humor and practical jokes. He was a mentor to many in his family, especially his nephew and nieces and their children. David was a fan of America’s Blue Highways, and after retiring David spent his time traveling on his motorcycle, hiking, fishing, skiing, hunting and enjoying his many friends in Santa Fe and beyond. He enjoyed annual trips to Cape Cod in the summer to be with his family where he would tell great stories of his adventures to his captivated audience of nieces and nephews. David leaves behind his best friend, Dianne Mazorol of Santa Fe NM along with many relatives: Sister Carol Horrigan and husband William of Dennis Mass; Nephew Michael Horrigan and his wife Linda of Avon, Conn; Niece Cheryl Vieira and her husband Anthony of Dennis Mass; and Lynne Gorsuch and her husband Brian of Yarmouth Mass. In lieu of flowers, David would prefer that you send all donations to the family of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As you know, David was a devout atheist whose preference would be to toast his friends at his favorite haunt.  Plans for a memorial for David in Santa Fe will be communicated at a later date.
