Diane was born May 27, 1938 in the small farming town of Faucett, Missouri. She attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she met Richard G. Curless, who was studying medicine. They were married in Vermillion on June 11, 1960.
The couple moved to Denver, Colorado, where Richard completed his medical degree, then to Providence, Rhode Island, and Albany, New York, where Richard was an intern and pediatric resident, respectively.
