Don R. Gonzales

Don R. Gonzales, age 79 and a resident of Santa Fe, NM passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025 surrounded in the embrace of his immediate family.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Redolfino & Stella Gonzales, brother Henry Gonzales, parents-in-law Martin & Lupita Vigil and sister-in-law Alice Gordon. He is survived by Florence, his wife of 41 years, daughter Nancy Valdez (Daniel), son Peter David (Dorinda), grandchildren Sofia Valdez, Charles Petrelli, Cody Werschem, and Samantha Werschem. Siblings Rosalie, Joe (Mickey), Martha, Maria (Chris), Jerry (Jenan), Ray (Bernadette), Tomas (Cynthia), sisters-in-law Silvia Gonzales, Connie Maestas, Lucille Acuna and Suzie Archuleta, brothers-in-law Ricardo, Fidel (Lorraine), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Don grew up in Tesuque, NM and was surrounded by aunts, uncles and numerous cousins who he enjoyed visiting regularly. He enjoyed spending time hiking and fishing in the mountains. At home, he enjoyed gardening and landscaping and he masterfully built his own home. Don was a voracious reader and a student of history, spending much time at the library. Don was a great conversationalist and never met a stranger. He easily struck up conversations with anyone, which often led to the discovery of familial connections or the development of lifelong friendships. 

The family wishes to express their deepest and heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the Ambercare Rehabilitation/Therapeutic and Hospice personnel for the exceptional and compassionate care provided to Don during his extended illness. The family would also like to thank the City of Santa Fe Senior Services Department and Respite Care Program. 

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 417 Agua Fria St., Santa Fe, NM on Friday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m.

Due to Santa Fe County’s currently increasing and easily transmittable influenza illness, a celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.
