Doris Withey-Maahs Obituary
Birthplace: Syracuse, New York Resided In: Santa Fe, New Mexico On May 24, 2024, a beautiful soul was lost. Doris was a dear friend, as well as being a cherished family member, a respected colleague, and an adored caretaker to her kitties, Sombra and Cineza.
She was born August 14, 1939, in Syracuse, NY the daughter of the late Chester and Irene (King) Maahs.
The memory of Doris' and her smile will forever live on in our hearts. To fill the emptiness will be a challenge, but knowing that she is pain-free now, after fighting cancer as courageously and gracefully as possible, her family and friends are confident that she is smiling and laughing, as she waits for us with arms extended in the afterlife. As one of her friends said, "We are better for having known her".
Doris grew up on a farm where her family raised black angus beef cattle in upstate New York. In the early 1960's she drove from the East to West coast on Route 66. Doris lived in California working for TWA Airline before moving to Alaska where she was married and had her 3 children. Doris retired from Chugach Electric in Alaska, and was still an active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), when she moved with her daughter to New Mexico.
Doris had a strong spirit and accepting heart. She preferred being a homebody, was an avid reader and a happy gardener with a green thumb. She really, really enjoyed: sitting in the courtyard with a glass of wine and a book; conversation with the neighbors and "playing in the dirt" as we called container gardening.
Surviving relatives include daughter Julie Garoutte, of Sante Fe, NM; son Dan (Kay) Withey their children Jasmine and Jake of Anchorage, AK; son Dave (Michelle) Withey their children Madalyn and Camden of Olympia, WA; sister Barbara (William) Schneider of Elbridge, NY; nephew Mark (JoAnn) Schneider of Elbridge, NY; great niece Jana Schneider of Memphis, NY; great nephew, Josh (Allyson) Schneider and their children Brynn, William, Hannah and Olivia of Marcellus, NY; great nephew Sam (Allison) Schneider of New Iberia, LA; and, niece Debbie Schneider (Ken Wolfe) of Marcellus, NY.
