Dr. Peter Michaelides was a teacher, composer, and photographer who for the past twenty five years has offered his unique intellectual and artistic gifts to the Santa Fe and Albuquerque communities. He was born in Athens, Greece in 1930, and came to this country at the age of nine. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to 1954. Returning from military service, he earned a Master of Music from Oberlin Conservatory and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Dr. Michaelides lent his musical talents to the Greek Orthodox Church. He composed a full liturgy as well as settings of various Byzantine hymns, and he also served as musical director of several Greek Orthodox Parishes. Dr. Michaelides enjoyed a long and successful career as Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Northern Iowa, then moved to New Mexico to enjoy his retirement. He remained active as a composer, and several of his works were performed in Santa Fe. He pursued his lifelong passion for photography here was well, drawn to New Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes, and dramatic skies. He is survived by his son, Chris (Barbara); his sister, Daphne Rhodes (Douglas), and his brother, Stephen (Jeanne); several nieces and nephews; and he leaves behind many wonderful friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Rivera Family Kiva Chapel, with Rev. Hollis Walker officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
