The family made a brief move to Pana, Illinois, where Edgar’s father started an electrical contracting business. Not long after, the decision was made to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico and try the dairy business.

Edgar graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1947, and after working for several construction companies, including his father’s electrical company Modern Electric, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in February of 1952. After basic training in Fort Bliss, Texas he was shipped overseas and stationed in Mannheim and Wiesbaden, Germany. With the rank of a Corporal, Edgar served 22 ½ months with the 63rd AAA gun battalion anti-aircraft unit as a lineman.
While on a 3-day leave, Edgar met Margaret Jane Kliene and 3 days later they were engaged to be married. Edgar and Margaret married on January 25, 1953, and had four children. Edgar would eventually take over Modern Electric Company from his father, until his retirement in 1998.
