Eloisa Luna Block, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and community member passed away in her Santa Fe home March 17, 2021 surrounded by family. She was born July 13, 1931 in Puerto de Luna, NM.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50+ years, John Block, Jr., parents, Tomas and Ricarda G. Luna, in-laws, J. Ramon and Francisquita de Sales Salazar, daughter, Clarissa Block, step-son, Jimmy Block, and brothers, Abe and Nick Padilla and Max Luna.
She is survived by children: Sophie Bertrand (Dan), Jovanna Whitehead (Raymond), John Block III, Angela Lobato (Joseph), step-sons Joseph Block (Dina), Jerome Block (Patsy), Jackie, and Jeff Block; twenty-one grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; sister, Terry Cruz, brother Thomas Luna (Leora) and in-laws Clarabelle Padilla, Sylvia Salazar, Mary Agnes Gallegos, Bennie Salazar and Arthur Salazar.
Eloisa lived the Catholic faith she practiced daily, showing unconditional love and kindness to everyone she encountered. She served and advocated for those in need; attended daily mass, led rosaries at the Rosario Chapel before novena masses, made pilgrimages to Santuario de Chimayo, and participated in Holy Week retreats at the Pecos Benedictine Monastery. She was a member of the St. Francis Cathedral Altar Society, the Nocturnal Adoration Society at the St. Francis Cathedral and at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She made worldwide pilgrimages to sites touched by the Blessed Mother.
Eloisa’s selfless devotion to family created a beautiful, caring and nurturing home encompassing her large extended family and friends who benefited from her effortless hospitality. She found great joy in preparing meals, hosting events, and filling her home with laughter. She touched innumerable lives through her love.
Eloisa left a legacy of exemplary service to New Mexico, serving in the Legislature for 57 years before retiring as Deputy Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives in 2014. She used her position to help those in need of a job, mentoring many into leadership, always with the highest level of professionalism. She worked with two NM Governors, and also served as the Director of the NM Bureau of Elections.
Her friends and family will miss her caring heart. Her love is a beacon of light for all blessed to know her. Her Funeral Mass may be accessed through the Rivera Family Funeral Home website. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. She blessed all those leaving her home with a wave turned into the sign of the cross and salutation “Go in the peace of the Lord” – and so she has.
