Gene Gonzales

November 16, 1949 — February 16, 2023

Eloy (Gene) Gonzales, 73 went home to be with our Lord on February 16, 2023. Gene was a lifelong resident of Santa Fe. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is preceded in death by his parents Claudio and Lourdes Gonzales, son Rodney Gonzales, great-granddaughter Sophia Torres, brother Mariano Gonzales and special pet Ralphy. He is survived by his loving wife Grace, daughters Michelle Gurule (Joseph), Eloisa, sons Gabriel (Inez), Patrick (Lisa).  Grandchildren Andrea Torres (David), Brittany Gurule (Adan), Michael, Kaylie Gabor (George), Gabriel (Nicole), and Brian. Great-grandchildren Gracie Torres and Josiah Gene Torres. Sisters Helen Gonzales and Connie Roybal (Carlos), brothers Ruben (Marie) and Dennis (Kathy), sister-in-law Sophie Gonzales, numerous nieces and nephews, special brothers Sam Quintana and Fred Lopez and his special pet Knuckles.

Gene’s life was filled with serving his family, friends, and country. Staff Sergeant Gonzales began his distinguished military career in the New Mexico Army National Guard, where he served for over 30 years, in various assignments, receiving numerous military decorations and awards before his retirement. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces reserve Medal in addition to many other military awards and citations. He was a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed trips to his homes away from home Sandia Casino, Ruidoso Downs and visiting with family.

A Rosary will be recited followed by a Mass at 10:00 am Friday, March 10, 2023, at St. Anne Catholic Church. Burial services with full military honors will take place on Monday, March 13, 2023, at 12:30 pm at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers Sam Quintana, Fred Lujan, Albert Lujan, Thomas Nino, Frank Gonzales, and Raymond Gonzales
