We are saddened to write that our loved person, friend, and colleague Gennady Berman passed away surrounded by his loving family in Los Alamos, NM, on March 5, 2022.
Gennady was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1946. In 1970 he graduated Department of Physics, Novosibirsk State University (NSU), Academic City (AC), Novosibirsk, Russia.
At the beginning of his scientific career Gennady worked at Institute of Nuclear Physics and Kirensky Institute of Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences. He got a PhD degree in Physics and
Second Doctor Degree in Physics and Mathematics. He was also Professor of Theoretical physics.
Since 1993 Gennady was a member of the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos NM, first as a visitor, then as a staff scientist and Deputy Group Leader from 1997 till his retirement in 2014.
Gennady Berman was a theoretical physicist with broad contributions in Quantum Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Plasma Physics. In particular, he made important contributions to the theory of Quantum Chaos. During his distinguished career that spanned over 50 years, Dr. Berman co-authored over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and at least eight books in the areas of quantum chaos, quantum spin systems, quantum computation, and magnetic resonance.
Gennady was a great family man, he had devoted wife Tamara, loving son Dimitri and two beautiful grandsons. He loved life, always looked on the bright side, and had an endless supply of jokes. Above all else, he loved nature in all its possible ways. He loved fishing and long walks with family and friends.
Gennady was a dear colleague to many of us. We will miss Gennady, his wisdom, goodness, and wit.
