George Sweet

November 12, 1929 — October 16, 2017

George Hewlett Sweet passed away peacefully on October 16, 2017 holding the hand of his lovely wife of 59 years, Jo Ann Sweet. He was born November 12, 1929 to George Hewlett McDonough and Dorothy Dodd McDonough of Glendale California. George grew up in San Francisco California, graduating with academic honors from Lincoln High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force and served with honor and distinction in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In Korea, as a strong proponent of education, he taught many young recruits how to read and helped several get their GED. He retired from the US Air Force after 20 years having served at Park AFB California, Connelly AFB Texas, Osan AFB Korea, and Lackland AFB Texas as a training instructor, and Kadena AFB Okinawa, and Whiteman AFB Missouri as a cryptography specialist. George completed his post retirement career working at the Hewlett Packard Corporation in Cupertino California as an international instructor in computer diagnostics and repair. George enjoyed volunteering as an officer in the American Legion at posts in Waco Texas and Albuquerque New Mexico. In the American Legion he held many district and statewide positions and was passionate about the scholarship program and serving in the American Legion Honor Guard. He was an excellent cook, and enjoyed worldwide travel, and watching sports with his family; especially basketball, football, and baseball teams from the San Francisco Bay Area. He was a consummate history buff and avid reader and spent many hours immersed in military books and visiting historic sites and museums. George will be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father, a responsible go-to man who got stuff done, and a tireless volunteer for the less fortunate and in particular for military veterans. He is preceded in death by his sister Patricia Keane, and his two grandsons Russell and Brent Sweet. George is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Jo Ann Sweet, and his two sons Greg Sweet and his family of Albuquerque New Mexico and Martin Sweet and his family of Los Alamos and Santa Fe New Mexico. Services will be held on November 6, 10:30am, at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
