George A. Wells of Fort Worth died February 24, 2008, in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 92.
Mr. Wells was born in 1916 in Heart's Content, Newfoundland. His family came to the United States in 1923, and settled in Oakland, California.
After high school graduation, George worked for several years as a flight instructor, crop duster, and barn storming pilot. He joined American Airlines in 1940, and in 1941 was promoted to Captain, based in Fort Worth. He taught Navy pilots and flew for the Air Transport Command during World War II. He was chief pilot for American in Chicago during the 1960s, then returned to Fort Worth, serving as Assistant Vice President – Line Flying. After retirement, he continued to work as a simulator instructor for American until 2001.
George and his beloved wife, Mary Ellen, were among the first residents of the Lake Country Estates area on Eagle Mountain Lake, and had many friends in that community. He was a devoted family man and an ardent sailor. Mary Ellen died in 2002. He is survived by a daughter, Jane A. Wells, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and by two sons, George Wells, Jr. of Idaville, Indiana and Christopher Wells and his wife Cathy, of Valparaiso, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Deborah Geoffrion, Ginna Van Delinder, Casey Wells, Keith Wells, Scott Wells, Michael Wells, Jake Wells, and Ty Wells; two great-grandchildren, Rio Geoffrion and Laurel Geoffrion, and 11 nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 8, 2008, at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 4350 River Oaks Boulevard, Fort Worth. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the charity of your choice.
