Gilbert Herrera

Gilbert Ricardo Herrera, a lifelong resident of the Española Valley, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2008. His children and grandchildren will forever remember him as a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. Gilbert had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He gave his family and friends many happy memories that will keep his legacy of love and friendship alive for generations to come. Born on August 28, 1933, to Mariquita and Alfredo Herrera, Gilbert was the eldest of eight children. As a young man, he met the love of his life, Gloria Sanchez Herrera, and together they raised five children: Craig Herrera and companion Barbara Arnold of Taos; Gary Herrera and wife Molly of Chimayo; Yvonne and husband Ed Montoya of La Mesilla; Rose Ann and husband Tim Maestas of La Mesilla; and Gilbert T. Herrera of Española. When his children grew up and had families of their own, Gilbert dedicated the golden years of his life to his grandchildren: Lloyd and Lita Herrera; Adam and Lisa Herrera; Andrea Maestas; Lynette Maestas; Alfredo Herrera; Angelica Maestas; Ricardo and Jacklyn Herrera; Joey Maestas; Rocky Herrera; Reyna Herrera; Rodney and Rose Montoya; and Daniel and Margot Montoya. Seven great-grandchildren are fortunate to have know Gilbert as their great-grandfather: Adan Herrera; Rico and Luciano Herrera; Delilah Herrera; Delanie and Brianna Montoya; and Gabriel Montoya. Gilbert is survived by his brother, Rosario Joe Herrera and wife Ascension of Velarde; his brother Leroy Herrera and companion Jay of Albuquerque; and his sister Dora Serrano of Gallina. Gilbert was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gloria; sisters Ida and Cordelia Herrera; brothers Paul, Alfredo, Clyde, Albert, Fermin, and Dennis Herrera; and his parents. A memorial service will be held at El Buen Pastor Church in Española, on Friday, March 14, 2008, at 7:00 pm. Burial service will follow on Saturday, March 15, 2008, also at El Buen Pastor in Española. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery 417 East Rodeo Road, Santa Fe.
