Grace Stone

November 22, 1931 — November 19, 2023

Grace lived a long, full life. She was born in Manchester New Hampshire, the third child of four, daughter of Judge Peter Woodbury and Mrs. Margaret Woodbury. She attended St. Mary’s in the Mountains (now the White Mountain School) and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Art History at Smith College. Meeting her beloved Albert E. “Al” Stone soon after graduation when she was working in the slide room at Yale University, they were married on July 5, 1954. A son, Albert E. “Ned” Stone, and a daughter, Rebecca Rollins Stone, completed the family. Grace and Al had fifty-seven happy years together raising a family, travelling widely, doing charitable works, and being very active.

Grace’s favorite activity and lifelong passion was riding horses, which she started at age three and mastered the top levels of dressage in her fifties. Notable horses were Honza, Tossano, and Kennebeck Merlin. She loved cats and dogs as well, rescuing many during her life.

She is survived by daughter Rebecca Stone, grandson Dylan Stone-Miller, granddaughter Rhiannon Stone-Miller, brother David Woodbury, and sister Charlotte Spencer. She cared deeply for Rebecca’s partner, Bill Meuser, as well as her many friends at Santa Fe’s El Castillo Life Plan Community and beyond. Grace will be missed.

Charities she supported included: St. Bede’s Episcopal Church and The Horse Shelter in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Southwestern Indian Foundation; World Wildlife Fund; Southern Poverty Law Center; and Doctors without Borders.

A memorial service will be held on the Third of December at 3:30 pm at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church at 550 West San Mateo, Santa Fe, NM.
