Henry Peña Anaya

December 3, 1929 — April 19, 2021

Henry P. Anaya, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, 91, passed away on April 19, 2021. He was born in Santa Fe on December 3, 1929 to Basilio and Miquelita (Peña) Anaya, and was raised at his beloved family ranch in Stanley, New Mexico.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents Basilio and Miquelita Anaya, his loving wife Emma (Montoya) Anaya, their infant son Joseph Michael Anaya, as well as many brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces.

Henry is survived by his children, Annette Anaya, Kathy Lucero (Greg), Chris Anaya (Trish), Carmela Segura (David), Paula Lujan (Bob), Gabe Anaya (Carmen) and his grandchildren, Enrique Anaya, Elise Anaya, Noelle Lucero, Jayden Lucero, Camille Anaya (Ben), Emma Anaya, Angel Anaya, Estevan Segura, Joaquin Segura, Brandon Lujan (Brittani), Amber Lujan, Tori Anaya, Noah Anaya, Elijah Anaya, and his great-grandchildren Kai Anaya, Kade Lujan. He is also survived by his sister Mary Lou Salazar (Hank), sisters-in-laws Mary Ann Anaya and Clarabelle Anaya, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Henry graduated from Stanley high school in 1948 and went on to serve in the 48th Ordnance Group of the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations from 1950-1953. During his service he was stationed in Germany. He began his federal government career in 1949 in Los Alamos and worked for the Los Alamos Fire Department from 1955-1985.

Henry met Emma Montoya and the couple were married in 1957. As members of the San Isidro Catholic Community, Henry and Emma were instrumental in the inauguration of San Isidro Parish from a Mission to a Parish. Henry and Emma raised six children. He loved camping, especially at the family ranch in Stanley, where he had a special place in his heart for the 4th of July branding of cattle and the food and family that shared their love of one another. Henry was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor.

Our family would like to give a special thank you to his granddaughter, Elise Anaya, who cared for Henry for the last seven years. Elise administered dialysis during the last three years and spent many sleepless nights caring for him, and praying with him.

Our family would also like to thank Danilo and Tere Nova, Lubia Aristondo, Rosa Madrid-Fierro, The Dialysis Center of Santa Fe, Ambercare Home Health Care and Hospice and a special thanks to Father John Cannon for his many blessings and prayers on behalf of Henry.

Pallbearers are Enrique Anaya, Greg Lucero, Chris Anaya, David Segura, Bob Lujan and Gabe Anaya. Honorary Pallbearers are all his grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited on Monday, May 3, 2021 at 6 p.m. at the Rivera Family Funeral Home Kiva Chapel of Light, 417 E. Rodeo Road, Santa Fe NM 87505. A mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at San Isidro Catholic Church at the Center, 3552 Agua Fria St., Santa Fe NM 87507 and burial will follow at the National Cemetery. Covid restrictions will be followed at these gatherings.
