James Crowl

1935 — September 2, 2023

James D Crowl, born in 1935, passed away in the company of his family on September 2, 2023, after an extended illness.

He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and John Crowl, son Michael, daughter Kimberly, sisters Margaret MacArthur and Sara Edelman, and grandson Wesley Crowl.

He is survived by his partner of many years, Carter Griffin, son Scott Crowl (Janet), grandson Nick Crowl (Riley), and brother, Jack Crowl.

He is also survived by nephews John MacArthur (Pam), Max Edelman, Johnny Crowl (Cory), Dan MacArthur (Gail) and Gary MacArthur (Martina); nieces Aimee Edelman (Jay) and Megan MacArthur (Mark); Lyn Crowl (Scott's mother); brother-in-law Rick Edelman; and great-grandson Marcus Montez.

After graduating in forestry engineering from Oregon State University, Jim and his family moved to Alaska where he worked for the State Highway Department and the US Forest Service.  They moved to Vermont and then to Nevada, where he was the Reno Area District Fire Ranger.  They moved to Taos in 1969, and Jim founded Rio Grande Surveying Service in 1971.

Jim is remembered today as an accomplished outdoorsman and adventurer.  Besides hunting and fishing, he was an avid sailor, teaching himself to sail on Heron Lake and then sailing for years on the Sea of Cortez.  He traveled to Alaska with friends where they paddled inflatable kayaks down the Kukpowruk River to the Chukchi Sea.  Later he and long-time friend Jon Klingel paddled the Wolverine and Seal Rivers to Hudson Bay.  With nephew John MacArthur and brother-in-law John MacArthur Sr., he traveled to the Antarctic Peninsula, Patagonia, and the Falkland Islands.  Carter and Jim fished for many years in their favorite haunts in Colorado.  For over two decades, Jim took annual backcountry ski trips to the 10th Mountain Huts with a group of friends that called themselves the Foggies for Fun.

Stories abound.  With his inquisitive mind and adventurous spirit, he will be sorely missed.
