James Evert Mathews. M.D. dies suddenly December 16, 2017, in Albuquerque, NM after being airlifted to Lovelace Heart Hospital.
Dr. Mathews was born November 22, 1936, in Pampa, Texas. He lived his early life in Throckmorton, Texas and later graduated from Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan College and Tulane Medical School. During the 1960s, he served in the Army Medical Corp with stations in Fort Hood, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After completing a residency in General Surgery at Scott and White Hospital and a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple, Texas, Dr. Mathews practiced surgery in Big Spring, Texas from 1972 until retirement in 2002. He served as Chief of Staff at Malone Hogan Clinic for several years. He was active in the Texas Surgical Society before moving to Santa Fe in 2012. A daily golfer, he was also high school and college football and basketball player.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary Lindsey Mathews, and three daughters: Anne Mathews, New York, NY, Mary Catherine Mathews (Bill Bennett) of Santa Fe, NM, Kristina Mathews Lafaye M.D. (Ryan Lafaye), New Orleans, La.; and seven grandchildren: Robert, Charles, and Christopher Nunziato, New York; Anna and Sophie Bennett, Santa Fe; Claire and Will Lafaye, New Orleans’ sisters Sue Yeary and Joy Cogburn, Texas.
Dr. Mathews was preceded in death by his father, John Evert Mathews, and mother, Eunice Jones Mathews Estridge.
Cremation will take place in Santa Fe followed by a Rite of Committal service at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas in January.
