James Grahmann

June 4, 1926 — October 6, 2021

Brother James N. Grahmann, FSC died in Santa Fe, New Mexico on October 6, 2021. He was born on June 4, 1926 to Nicholas A Grahmann and Annie Grafe in the rural town of Hallettsville, TX the oldest of 11 children.  He received the Brothers’ robe August 14, 1944. He completed his bachelor’s degree at St. Michael’s College in  Santa Fe, NM in 1948. He taught in the Junior Novitiate and Cathedral High School in Lafayette, LA. In 1959 he served as principal and community director at Landry Memorial High School in Lake Charles, LA.  He later returned to Lafayette, LA to teach at Cathedral-Carmel High School.  He also taught at O’Connell High School in Galveston, TX. In 1975 he was appointed to the New Orleans-Santa Fe District to supervise District ministries. In 1978 he accepted an opportunity in Houston to take on the challenge of the successful continuation of Marian High School, a private high school. After nine years, Brother made a personal retreat at Sangre de Cristo retreat house.  In 1989 he worked on development at St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe, NM as President of the Board of Directors during which time he started the St. Michael’s Foundation to raise funds for the school. He spent his last retirement years with the Christian Brothers in El Paso, TX and Santa Fe, NM.

 Brother retired in 1998 and spent much of his time doing historical research and publishing obituaries of the brothers and affiliated members. He also did research on his family in Germany and Texas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Annie Grahmann, his sisters Sister Anastasia, Sister Sylvia and Rita Zaruba and his brother Bishop Charles Grahmann.  He is survived by brothers and sisters, Marcus, Jerome, Fred, Nicholas, Jr. Mary Ann Michalke, Anita Spangler and his brother-in-law Frank Zaruba.

A private funeral service will be held October 27 in the Brothers’ Chapel at St. Michael’s. The service will be available on Zoom. For more information, contact the Brothers or St. Michael’s High School.  A burial service will be held in Hallettsville, TX in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on November 27 preceding the interment in the church cemetery.
