Joel B. Stein 87, passed away on April 22, 2018 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was born on May 14, 1930 in New York City. Joel married Mary Catherine Kennedy on September 3, 1959 in New York City at the Fifth Avenue Hotel.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Ella and Edward Stein and by his son David Stein.
Joel is survived by his wife: Mary Stein; daughter and son-in-law: Emily and Lincoln Post; son and daughter-in-law Peter Stein and Elizabeth Trundle; daughter-in-law: Niki Stein Ganz; sister: Sylvia Weinberg; and grandchildren: Rowan, Anna, Haley, Vivian, Raymond, and Jack.
Raised in the Bronx, Joel graduated from New York University and was drafted into the army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC.
After a career in advertising where he started an agency with two partners, he followed his father’s path to Wall Street where he was a corporate bond broker for twenty years finishing his career at Cantor Fitzgerald where he worked in the World Trade Center, retiring in 1992. After a brief stint in Boulder, Colorado, he and Mary retired to Santa Fe and began their new life. Joel trained as a docent for the History Museum and The Santa Fe Opera. He became a tour guide and gave historic tours of Santa Fe for almost ten years, during which time he wrote a book, Santa Fe in a Week (more or less).
Joel loved being with people. He loved telling stories and jokes whether with his beloved breakfast group, strangers on one of his tours, or his friends and family. More than anything, Joel loved his soul-mate and wife of 58 years, Mary.
Interment will be on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 1PM on May 19th at Rivera Family Funeral Home on 417 East Rodeo Road in Santa Fe.
