Joe G. Ortiz (Jose Gregorio Ortiz) age 95 was called home by the Lord, Thursday, August 4, 2016. He was born in Cañada de Los Alamos on January 21, 1921 to Ramon and Carlotta Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, half-brother Pedro Vigil Ortiz and grandson Kenneth M. Anaya. Also, close cousins Sabino and Maria Gonzales and many other relatives. Mr. Ortiz served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an ambulance driver receiving the driver and mechanic badge, Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Philippine Defense ribbons, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. Joe retired from Eberline Instruments in 1986. Mr. Ortiz was a lifetime member of the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish serving in many capacities including the Holy Name Society, Nocturnal Adoration Society, Lector, Usher, Eucharistic Minister, Altar Server and opening the church every morning for 6:30 a.m. daily Mass. He was also honored as a recipient of the St. Francis of Assisi award in October of 2007. Joe or “Little Joe” as he was often called, enjoyed hunting, bowling, bingo, taking trips to Laughlin with the Senior’s and of course dancing at the monthly Senior dances. Jose is survived by his son Gilbert (Pat), daughter Juliana (Julie) and friend Paul J. Martinez who cared for him very much, his grandchildren Karen Chavez and Greg Ortiz, great-grandchildren Camille and Darren Chavez, sister-in-law Mrs. Grace Letteer of California and many nephews and nieces, cousins and friends (Rose). He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Pallbearers are Karen Chavez, Greg Ortiz, Chuck Montoya, Joseph Lopez, Eddie George and Steve Rodriguez. A Viewing will begin Monday, August 15, 2016 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. In Lieu of flowers donations may be sent in his memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Building Fund or the Carmelite Monastery. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to Santa Fe Care Center and Del Corazon Hospice for their loving care. Also, to FR. Tri and Fr. Sostenes, Mary Karshis, Judy Espinosa, Gilbert Martinez, Joseph Lopez, Manny Montoya and all who visited him…Thank you very much and may God bless you all.
