John "Nepe" Vigil

Santa Fe - With deep sadness, we announce the passing of John "Nepe" Vigil, who was born on February 3, 1940, in Santa Fe, N.M. and was called home to our Lord on February 24, 2025, at the age of 85, surrounded by his loving family.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Eloisa Vigil, his beloved wife Adelaida, his son Christopher, his brothers Alfonso, Gilbert, and David, mother-in-law Sobeida Varos, as well as many sisters- and brothers-in-law.

He is survived by his children Carolyn Vigil, John (Isabelle), and Mark (Carrie); his sister Faustina Vigil; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many other sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

John began his career with Southwest Distributing for 15 years, and then served the City of Santa Fe Fire Department, as a firefighter for 20 years before retiring in 1988. He later joined the Santa Fe Opera as a security guard, retiring a second time in 2016 after 26 years of dedicated service.

In his spare time, John loved working on wood crafts, such as making crosses to share with family and friends. He cherished visiting with his loved ones and enjoyed every moment spent together.

John was a gentle, loving, and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, always prioritizing his family above all else. Known for his humility and simplicity, he had a heart full of generosity and compassion. He loved life, treasured his family, and valued his special friendships deeply.

A rosary will be recited on March 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1301 Osage Ave., Santa Fe, NM, with interment at Memorial Gardens, 417 Rodeo Rd.
