John Martin, December 7, 1960 – May 6, 2016
John Martin passed away in Los Alamos May 6, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Rhode Island and lived in New Hampshire, Melbourne, Australia, and most recently Los Alamos, NM.
He is survived by his son Tim of Los Alamos; sister Kristen Dors, her husband Eric, and their sons Kevin and Brian of Los Alamos, his sister Joanne Balduf, her husband Carl and their children Eric and Olivia of Plainville, Massachusetts, his sister Beverly of New Hampshire, his brother Bob of Massachusetts, and his sister Katie of New Hampshire. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Claire.
He earned a MBA from New Hampshire College and worked for many years as a purchasing agent for manufacturing industries as well as local council governments in Australia. He found joy in Toastmasters and making people laugh. He lived for 18 years in Melbourne, Australia were he found his true calling as a youth basketball coach. He spent many years coaching at both domestic and junior championship level at the Eltham Wildcat Basketball Club. In 2015, John was awarded the coveted Glenn Wynd Coaching Award and his teams went on to win back-to-back championships. He was a recent transplant to Los Alamos, joining his son Tim in his American adventure.
A private burial at Guaje Pines and memorial to celebrate his life was held in Los Alamos and another is planned with his New England family and friends this summer. A special tribute basketball game was held in his honor for friends and his basketball family in Melbourne, Australia. John was a wonderful father, son, brother, uncle, and coach. He made friends quickly and kept many for a lifetime. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
