Jose "Lupe" Young, 86 of Questa, NM., beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, compadre, padrino, uncle and friend to many, passed away peacefully at Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, NM on February 6, 2021. Lupe, aka “Lupito”, was born on February 9, 1934 in Walsenburg, CO to Maria Guadalupe “Lupita” Pino and Miguel Clodoveo “Mike” Montoya. Shortly after his birth, his mother died of sepsis and he was quickly adopted by his aunt and uncle, Maria Carmelita (Montoya) and Jose Samuel Young of Cerro, NM.  On June 8, 1957 he married Theresa Margaret Gonzales of Santa Fe, NM.

Lupe is preceded in death by his parents Carmelita and Samuel Young of Cerro/Questa, his brothers, Jose "Joe" Montoya of Redwood City, CA and Esequiel “Kelly” Montoya of Corrales.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Theresa Young of Questa, and his children, Deborah Young of Albuquerque, Vince (Stacey) Young of Los Lunas, Vernon Young of Jaroso, CO, Georgette Young of Albuquerque, Martin (Bernadine) Young of El Salvador, Jeanine (Scott) Weyand of Austin, TX, Eugene Young of Questa, Priscilla Benavides of Albuquerque, and an adopted adult son, Tom (Jeannie) Esgate of Taos. Furthermore, his sister Duby (John) Rael of Albuquerque, his brother Jose Floyd Montoya of Mountain View, CA., and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, primos and primas.

Lupe was a lifelong resident of Cerro and Questa.  Along with his wife and children, he became a successful farmer and rancher. He had an affinity for his cattle located out in Sunshine aka “The Rancho.”  He made daily treks to feed and water his cows and treated them like his children.  He was a devout Catholic and attended church services at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Cerro), Saint Edwin (Red River) and Sagrado Corazón (Costilla). He served as the President for the Llano Irrigation Ditch and West Latir Ditch Associations, served on the Questa Independent School Board and worked as a state employee at the Port of Entry near Cerro.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13, 2021, at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church in Cerro. The Rosary will be recited at 9:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM with the burial immediately following at the Cerro Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and limited seating, we ask that family be seated before guests. 

The Young family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Vilma Bailon, she was forever coming to my Dad’s rescue with regards to his health issues and the ICU Staff at Holy Cross Hospital for taking such great care of our Dad, You All rock!  Rev Andrew Ifele, thank you for being a part of our Dad’s ceremony.
