Juan M. DeVargas, 82, of Taos passed away on September 13, 2005. He was a world war two veteran from 1942 to 1945, serving as a cook and medic in the South Pacific. He was a meat cutter at the Plaza Supermarket for 22 years, ambulance director in the 1970's, school bus driver, self employed farmer and rancher and sold flagstone. He was very well known for his humor and his music. He was preceded in death by his wife Lena Gonzales, his daughter Anna DeVargas Garcia, his parents, Delfina and Perfecto DeVargas, his brothers, Abaleno Vargas, Tito DeVargas, Eduardo Devargas and Maria DeVargas Martinez. He is survived by his children, Victor DeVargas (Susan) of Albuquerque, Jane DeVargas of Albuquerque, Jesse DeVargas (Karen) of Taos, Theresa Salazar (Ernesto) of Ponderosa, Loretta Cisneros (Cris) of El Prado, Albert DeVargas of Taos, Joseph DeVargas of Texas, Elena Williams (Jimmy) of Taos, 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Lucy Carter of Santa Fe, Ross DeVargas (Fabiola) of California, Angie Suazo (Gilbert) of Santa Fe, Tina Schmid of California, Beatrice Medina (Johnny) of Taos, Pete DeVargas (Connie) of Santa Fe, Consuelo DeHerrera (Valdimar) of Costilla, Doloris Romero (Merlin) of Taos, and numerous nieces and nephews and god children.
Rosaries were recited on September 14, 2005 and September 15, 2005. A Funeral mass was held on, September 16, 2005 at San Francisco de Asis. Interment followed at the Pacheco Cemetery.
