Julia Whitworth

Julia Rose Whitworth passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of September 28, 2022. She was born on March 27, 1967 to John and Harriet Whitworth in McAllen, TX. Julia is preceded in death by her father, John and daughter Sophia Rose. She is survived by her husband Alex Feldman; her mother, Harriet; two brothers, three sisters, two step sons, and numerous adored grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Julia’s love of learning and adventure started at an early age.  She graduated high school two years early as the valedictorian.  After completing her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics, Julia began her career as a scientist.  Between early jobs in Texas and New Mexico, she travelled the world.  Her life as a scientist brought her from Texas to New Mexico where on a site at Sandia National Lab she met her future husband Alex while wearing a gas mask and singing broadway tunes.  Julia and Alex went on to have long careers focused on nonproliferation and nuclear safety at Los Alamos National Labs.

Julia was a devoted mother, aunt, and grandmother.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her daughter Sophia, as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren.  She frequently crisscrossed the country to spend time with her young relatives, bringing with her a boundless enthusiasm for learning, books, and music. 

Julia spearheaded the Sophia Feldman Memorial Scholarship in honor of her late daughter.  The scholarship is awarded to Los Alamos High School seniors who have exemplary academic and personal conduct combined with participating in mentoring, anti-bullying, social justice, or related activities.

Julia also loved the outdoors.  She worked at Yellowstone, climbed Kilimanjaro and Popocatépetl, and was a regular presence on trails up and down the Rockies.  Closer to home, she spent time at Lookout Point in White Rock, which was a special place for her and her daughter Sophia.
