Lambert Chavez, age 92, of Taos, died Friday March 14, 2014. Lambert was born on the Canoncito (ToHajiilee) Navajo Reservation in 1922. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in both World War II and Korea. In January of 1946, he married the late Barbara Cottam Chavez of Taos, who was a schoolteacher in Canoncito. They divorced in 1947 and remarried in 1973. Lambert was a proud, kindhearted and generous man who dearly loved his family, horses and many pets. He enjoyed simple pleasures, and never took lifes blessings for granted. He celebrated his Navajo heritage through his silversmithing and woodworking talents. Throughout his lifetime, Lambert always took food and gifts to his many relatives and friends in Canoncito. Lambert is survived by 3 children: daughter PaulaSue Chavez, stepdaughter Deborah Sherman, and stepson Miguel Sherman (Kathy). He is also survived by a sister, Lita Chavez, of Albuquerque, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lambert was predeceased by his favorite nephew, Herman Chavez, whom Lambert helped raise. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter of Taos (575-758-2981). A burial with military honors was held on March 20, 2014 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
