Laura Romero, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, a 20th Century gem, at the age of 85 went home to the house of the lord Sunday, June 5, 2016. She will be missed for her grace, spirit, energy and great passion for family. Growing up in the depression, Laura was resourceful and shared her wisdom with her four children and 12 grandchildren. Laura was against wasting water and food and cared for her garden, flowers and fruit trees, which she generously shared with others. She had an unwavering faith in God and prayed for others. She enjoyed watching basketball games, listening to music by the Beatles, dancing and reading. Laura was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Ralph Romero. She was also predeceased by her son Roger Romero and her son-in-law Bradley Thomas III, her parents Augustine Urioste, Flora Urioste, her sister Aurora Padilla, and her brothers Joe, Leo, Henry, Luciano, and Eric.
She is survived by her daughter Christine Thomas, sons Greg Romero and wife Dolores, Ron Romero and wife Paulette; eight grand-children: John Romero, Synthia McDonald, Adamus and Brianna Romero, Sierra and Ashley Thomas, John and Alyssa Glaze, three great-grand-children: Dean, Caden and Colton McDonald. She is also survived by her sisters: Eloisa Pena, Juanita Urioste, Rebecca Mumbert, Celsa Gallegos, Dolores Prather and husband Ralph; her brothers David and Ed Urioste-and his wife Martha; and many other relatives and friends.
Special recognition for her son-in-law Bradley Thomas for preventing her from breaking a hip by catching her more than a 100 times, for Doug Thomas who was there when Brad left us helping her in her wheelchair, Sylvia Walter for taking time to care for her, excellent Caregiver-Shelby Pautrat, and J.R. and Pam (long-time friends of the family) for delivering posole to her in the hospital and at home, and for hosting the reception at Tiny’s Restaurant.
A viewing will be held at Rivera Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2016. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1301 Osage Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87505 on Tuesday, June 14, 2016: A viewing will be held before the mass from 7:45 a.m.-8:15 a.m., followed by a rosary at 8:15 a.m., and a Mass at 9:00 a.m. Laura will be laid to rest beside her husband at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 11:15 a.m. The family invites relatives and friends to a reception at Tiny’s Restaurant following the burial ceremony.
