Lt. Col. Ret. USAF – Lester S. Hackenberry died in Los Alamos, NM September 12, 2006. He was born in Williamsport, PA on April 4, 1921 to Lester J. Hackenberry and Arlene Stabley Hackenberry. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, David K. Hackenberry. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vivian Hakes Hackenberry. He is survived by his brother, Donald K. Hackenberry and wife Betty Lou of Wimberley, TX and brother, Charles S. Hackenberry and wife Marg of Lancaster, PA. He is also survived by his daughter, Leslie Vallejos and husband Michael S. Vallejos of Pueblo, CO and his son, Stephen A. Hackenberry and wife Rebecca Hackenberry of Los Alamos, NM; and grandchildren: Jennifer Belanger of Longmount, CO, Quirina Vallejos of Greensboro, NC, Patrick D. Hackenberry of Thomson, GA, Mauro Vallejos of Pueblo, CO, Kristopher L. Hackenberry of Thornton, CO, and Linnea Vallejos of Pueblo, CO, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lester was a World War II Veteran. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory from 1949 until his retirement in 1984.
Lester was a member of Crossroads Bible Church and a member of the P-51 Pilots Association. Lester was a contributor to many charitable organizations and besides his church and missionaries he enjoyed supporting Camp Susque near Williamport, PA. Lester enjoyed fly fishing and teaching fly fishing to others, and was a baseball fan.
Public visitation will be held on Monday, September 18, 2006 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Block-Salazar Mortuary in Española. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Bible Church in Los Alamos, 97 East Road.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in Mr. Hackenberry's Name.
