Lisa Kapp Evanson
On August 13, 2022 Lisa Kapp Evanson, 67, together with her husband James (Jim) Evanson, 75, died in a small plane crash enroute to visit family in New York.
Lisa was born on February 23, 1955 and raised in Livingston, New Jersey. Lisa’s love of art and design started early as her paternal grandmother was an established painter and her mother a professional photographer. After receiving a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis in 1977, Lisa moved to New York City where she met her future husband Jim and they began dating. She pursued her interest in architecture and design, attending Yale University to receive her Master of Architecture in 1983. Upon graduation, Lisa moved back to New York where they married on July 4, 1984. Dancing their first dance to Stevie Wonder’s Ribbons in the Sky and watching the dazzling fireworks display from a boat in New York Harbor, Lisa began creating the magic of her nearly 40 year partnership with Jim, building their family, their business and their creative lives together.
A talented architect and designer in her own right, Lisa also had the ability to encourage and nurture the talent of others. From the earliest days of their marriage, Lisa was Jim’s biggest supporter, collaborator, and promoter. Lisa's architectural training, keen eye for design and excellent marketing and business skills, combined with Jim’s talent and aesthetics were the key to their success. They each brought their best strengths and talents to their partnership creating a whole stronger than each half alone. In 1996 Lisa and Jim opened Evanson Studios, a showcase for Jim’s unique interior design and architectural work. The showroom was located in New York City’s D&D building, the premier location for designers worldwide seeking out the best in interior design. With Lisa managing the showroom and orchestrating much of what went on behind the scenes, Evanson Studios thrived in the hyper competitive NYC design market.
At the same time Lisa was growing a business, she never lost sight of what was most important to her. Lisa was a loving mother, fierce advocate and cheerleader for her children. Watching her daughter Pauli and son Arthur mature and succeed in their own lives as adults brought her endless joy. The marriage of her daughter Pauli to Pablo and the birth of her grandson Adrian added immensely to that joy.
A dear and caring friend, Lisa was someone you could always count on. Her friends were her extended family and she always welcomed everyone with a smile and a warm hug. Never one to take herself too seriously, Lisa could make anyone laugh. There was a crazy, light hearted and irreverent side to Lisa which made her all the more fun to be with. You always knew that whatever Lisa said or did, it was out of love and compassion. If she didn’t always take herself too seriously she didn't want you to either. Lisa’s favorite hobby was scouring local flea markets and on-line bazzars. With her designer eye and love of a good bargain she brought home countless treasures. Lisa loved to entertain at her lake house in Pawling New York. Her July 4th parties were legendary among her friends and a tradition she maintained for over 40 years.
In 2015, Lisa and Jim retired and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where they embarked on yet another successful collaboration; designing and building an award winning home that was the culmination of their life’s work together. Lisa loved her new life in Santa Fe where she made many new friends and had time to develop new interests and hobbies. Taking Spanish classes, gardening, learning to appreciate tequila and enjoying the quiet solitude of the Southwestern geography brought her much pleasure after a lifetime surrounded by the cacophony of NYC.
In addition to Lisa’s daughter Pauli, son Arthur, son-in-law Pablo and grandson Adrian, she is survived by her mother Charlotte Kapp, a survivor of the Holocaust. She is predeceased by her father William and brother Philip.
In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to the Santa Fe Animal & Humane Society where Lisa worked as a volunteer. The shelter is located at 100 Caja Del Rio Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 10:45 AM at the Rivera Family Kiva Chapel of Light, 417 Rodeo, Santa Fe, NM wth burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
