Loretta E. McCarthy born in Taos, on February 2, 1910, died in Taos on October 4, 2007. She was educated at St. Joseph's grade school in Taos and in 1929 she graduated from Loretto Academy in Santa Fe where she served as President of her class all four years. She attended St. Mary's College, Norte Dame, from 1929 to 1931 and graduated from Webster College, St. Louis, Missouri in 1933 where she majored in Music. She entered the Sisters of Loretto where she taught music and voice from 1934 to 1969. In 1951, Loretta received her Masters Degree in Music (Voice) from the Chicago Conservatory of Music. After leaving the Sisters of Loretto, she returned to Taos in 1969 and commenced teaching 3rd grade in the Taos Municipal Schools before retiring in 1995. During her teaching career, she taught in Chicago, Denver, Kansas City, Taos and Santa Fe. She especially enjoyed her years teaching in Taos. Loretta's parents were Justin H. and Emma McCarthy. Her father was an early Taos merchant whose home was on the Taos Plaza where Ogelvies is now located. Her siblings who predeceased her were Eileen M. McCarthy, Justin J. McCarthy (Marge), John F. McCarthy (Nan), Harry H. McCarthy (Charlotte) and George W. McCarthy (Pat) and nephew, Michael McCarthy. Surviving her are John (Jack) F. McCarthy (Kathy), Thomas E. McCarthy (Barbara), Charles J. McCarthy (Mary Jane), James H. McCarthy (Evie) and Mary Ann McCarthy, the children of John F. and Nan McCarthy; Sheila E. Grainger, the daughter of Justin J. and Marge McCarthy; Michelle Dupuy (Joe) and Maureen McCarthy (Joe Kinney), the daughters of Harry H. and Charlotte McCarthy; Patricia Sokol (Cy) and Catherine McCarthy the daughters of George W. and Pat McCarthy, and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Rosary was recited on Tuesday, October 09, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass was held on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church interment followed at Sierra Vista Cemetery.
