Lucy Gordan

Lucy I. Gordan, 86, November 19,1929 -- January 2, 2016 Was born to Maria de la Atocha (nee Salazar) and Jose Rosendo Maestas in Alcalde, N.M. She attended the Methodist Mission schools in Alcalde, McCurdy High School in Santa Cruz, and went to York College in York, Nebraska where she met her future husband Ted R. Gordan, Jr. Lucy and Ted were married in June 1951. Ted was in the Air Force and they lived in Bangor, Maine, for a while, where she worked at Woolworths. Upon his discharge they returned to New Mexico. They lived in Albuquerque and both attended the University of New Mexico. Lucy received her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education in 1955. She taught at San Felipe Pueblo after her first child, Linda, was born. After Ted received his degree in 1958 they moved to Santa Fe, where they had four more children. Eventually, they settled in Glorieta, NM. Lucy taught summer Kindergarten at Alvord Elementary for several years, helping Spanish speaking children to learn English prior to entering the first grade. In 1963 she began her teaching career at Alvord Elementary School where she taught first and second grade Bilingual classes for 32 years. She was an avid gardener, and devoted church member. She taught Sunday School classes, Summer Day Camp and was on the Board of Directors for many years at the Glorieta Baptist Church. She always enjoyed having a good time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother Maria de la Atocha Maestas, father Jose Rosendo Maestas and her brothers, Gabriel Maestas, Nick Maestas, and Adelino Maestas all from Alcalde. She is survived by her daughters Linda I. Gordan (Doug Conkle), Maria E. Varela (Steve), Carla A. Gordan (Dwayne Wilburn), Erica L. Ortega (Leroy Cordova), and her son Ted R. Gordan, III, and adopted grandson Theo R. Gordan Maestas, 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Serving as pall bears are Armando Varela, Brandon Ortega, Jerome Rivera, Theo R. Gordan, Ben Santana, Justin Santana. Honorary pall bearers are Gordan Ortega and Jessica J. Varela. Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm Thursday, January 7, 2016, followed by recitation of the rosary at 7:00 pm at Rivera Funeral Home Chapel, 417 East Rodeo Road, Santa Fe. Followed by Funeral services, Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11:00 am also at the Rivera Funeral Home Chapel. The family invites guests to join us for lunch immediately following the funeral services. Internment will occur at 2:00 pm at the Glorieta Cemetery, in Glorieta, NM.
