Marco Oviedo

June 11, 1948 — February 11, 2023

On Saturday, February 11th, 2023, Marco Antonio Oviedo, devoted husband, father of four, and grandfather of twelve, passed away at the age of 74.

Marco was born on June 11th, 1948, in Mexico City, Mexico, to Angelica and Marco Aurelio Oviedo, and was the second oldest of five siblings.  He became a naturalized US citizen on January 11th, 1985 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  He received a Bachelor of Science in Animal  Husbandry in 1970 in Mexico; a Master of Science in Large Animal Production in 1972 in Costa Rica; and completed Doctoral Studies in Animal Reproductive Physiology and Genetics in 1981 at NMSU in  Las Cruces, New Mexico.

He married Patricia Trujillo on August 18, 1980. He ran an equine reproduction practice in Chimayo, New Mexico from 1983 until 2023 and founded the Centinela Mammoth Donkey Reserve with his wife and partner, Patricia Trujillo- Oviedo.  He was a Santero and award-winning Spanish Market Artist and ran a foundry and gallery, Oviedo Carvings and Bronze, in Chimayo.

He was an artistic innovator - a visionary with a restlessly creative spirit - combining traditional and modern elements in his work.  His monumental sculptures can be seen at El Santuario De Chimayo and the Rancho De Chimayo Restaurant and in private collections all over the world, with a collector base that spans over 35 years.

Marco had many passions over the years, including beekeeping, racing pigeons, and restoring classic cars.  He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren during family gatherings and loved to pass on his knowledge of animals and art.  He was known for his strong work ethic, love of family, and friends, and for his deep and insightful dinner conversations.

Marco was preceded in death by his parents Angelica and Marco Aurelio.  He is survived by his siblings; Aurelio, Angelica, Teresa, and Rosalina, as well as his wife Patricia, and his children; Oliver, Daisy, Tony, J.J, step daughter Kelsy, and grandchildren Taylor, Isabella, Owen, Brandon, Sofia, Marcus, Tenzin, Virginia, Angelica, Sebastian, Catalina, and Uriel.
