MARGARET WELLS CHAPMAN, age 90, passed away peacefully on
April 20, 2011. Preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Rolland Wells, Sr.
and Ruth Edwards Wells; and her brother Elmer Wells, Jr. Survived by her
foster son Alphonso Lorza of Maryland, assorted friends and fellow
activists. She was married and divorced twice, to Paul Selgin (deceased)
and Glenn Chapman of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Margaret was born September 1, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She
attended John Brown University in Arkansas where she received a B.S.
degree in Biology. She then went on to receive an M.S. degree in
Nutrition from Cornell University, as well as completing a non-degree
graduate program at the National Institute of Health. For 45 years,
Margaret worked as a research technician in the fields of chemistry,
biology and physics at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington,
D.C.; Cornell University in Ithaca, NY; and the National Institute of Health in
Bethesda, MD. She retired from the U.S. Government in 1988 and found
her way to Taos. Here she became active in political and environmental
causes, advocating for a safe, healthy community.
According to her wishes, no services are planned. You may
remember Margaret with a donation to your favorite charity. We want to
thank the Taos Living Center and Mountain Home Health Care for their
help and kindness during Margarets final years. She was a good soul.
