Maria Amada Chacon

September 10, 1914 — December 2, 2016

Maria Amada Chacon passed away peacefully in her home December 2, 2016. She was born in Arroyo Hondo, September 10th, 1914 to Laureano Chacon and Cruzita Garcia Chacon. She had two sisters who preceded her in death: Odelia Chacon Lucero and Cleo Chacon, both of Pueblo Colorado. Her paternal grandparents were Manuel Chacon and Soledad Lucero Chacon. Amada spent her early years in Arroyo Hondo in her Grandmother Soledad’s home. Amada attended high school in Santa Fe, entrusted to the care of Mae Martinez Smith and Cleofas Martinez Jaramillo, Soledad’s nieces. Upon graduation she promptly returned to Taos. She joined the household of her cousin Escolastica Trujillo Liebert, where grandmother Soledad was residing. Amada worked for Funk’s 5 & 10 for a short period of time. She had been anticipating a teaching career, but was recruited to work for the telephone company, by the manager himself. She retired from the Santa Fe Telephone Office after a 35 year career and returned to Taos in 1999. Amada lived independently until age 99 and was cared for by family until she passed at 102. Maria never married but that did not stop her from having an immediate family. While assisting Escolastica in raising her daughters, she developed a special love for Ann. She thought of Ann as her daughter and Ann's children as her family. Maria is survived by: nephews: Raymond Lucero (Sylvia), Richard Lucero (Pat), nieces: Madeline Lucero Montiel (David), Theresa Lucero Binder, Dearest cousins: Ann Liebert, Marguerite Liebert Otero (Joe L.), Jacque Stribling Pascariello (Tony), Judy Stribling, Janet Stribling, Albino Chacon (Francis), Lourdes Chacon Trujillo, Dolores Chacon Simms, Pauline Chacon Psaltis, Priscilla Chacon Torres (Joseph), Lydia Chacon Widener (Don), decades of friends from Taos and Santa Fe, and many great nieces, nephews. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at 10 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be held at a later date.
