Marie Martinez

Our beloved mother, Marie Dorothy Martinez, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. She is survived by three daughters and their families: Kimberly Schroeder, Carolyn Gutierrez, son-in-law Derek Gutierrez, and Ella Twary. Also, her grandchildren: Danielle and Joey Gutierrez (and Joey's wife Andrea), Jacob Andazola, Adan, and Lorenzo Twary; great-grandchildren: Catalina Estrada, Tre and Ovani Cowles, and Ana’ Malia. Dorothy's sister and brothers: Tom Cordova (wife Lydia), Alberto Cordova, Marian Smith (husband Jerry), and James Cordova. She was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Tomas Cordova, brothers Samuel Romero, Barolin Romero, and Pablo Cordova, and sister Agnes Cordova.

Dorothy was born in Santa Fe on April 12, 1944, and grew up in Peñasco. She attended several schools, including Allison James Presbyterian School, Menaul School, and Peñasco High School, from which she graduated in 1963. She earned degrees in education from the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and the University of Las Vegas. She loved teaching and found it to be a great source of joy. Dorothy retired after a successful teaching career of 38 years, working in both Clark County Schools of Nevada and New Mexico Public Schools. She lived in various places throughout her life including Peñasco, NM, Leadville, CO, Milan, NM, Albuquerque, Truth or Consequences, NM, Arrey, NM, Las Cruces, Henderson, NV, and Pojoaque, NM. Wherever she lived, she made a good home.

Dorothy was a person of great faith and had a strong connection with the Presbyterian Church since childhood. Listening to one of life's stories or participating in one of her adventures was a treasured moment, and her family and friends will miss her great sense of humor and joy for life.

Memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 12th, at 2nd Presbyterian Church located at 812 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102, at 10:30 a.m.
