With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Marina Bernadette Gurulé, our loving sister, aunt and friend to all whose lives she touched, on March 6, 2021. She left us while sleeping peacefully at her home. Marina was the first born child of Ubaldo and Mary Gurulé born on May 20, 1929. She attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Parochial School and graduated from Loretto Academy. She worked at Woolworth’s on the Plaza, and then went on to start her career with the State of NM, at the Department of Health in the Child Welfare Division. Retiring after thirty some years, she pursued her favorite pastime, Baking. She was a master cook in the kitchen and a master of baking. She spent her retired years baking beautiful desserts, decorating elegant birthday cakes, as well as children’s storybook birthday cakes, and many varieties of cookies, especially at Christmas time. She started making family and friends’ wedding cakes, and from those amazing creations she was approached by many others to create beautiful cakes for them as well. Her baking and wonderful dinners are already missed.
Marina is predeceased by her parents, Ubaldo and Mary Gurule, her brother UB, her sister Gertrude (just 8 months ago) and several close Aunts and Uncles. She is survived by sisters, Dolores (Andy, dec) Nava, Loyola, Jane, and Pat Griego. Many grand nephews and nieces and great-grand nephews and nieces, and great-great grand nephews and great-great grandnieces.
A big Thank You to Debbie Romero, who Marina helped raise and considered her a daughter, for being her main caregiver, along with her sisters Loyola and Jane, and nieces Camille and Darlene who were always instantly available when needed. Thank you to Debbie’s children, Carlos, dec, Andrew Romero, Felicia, Heaven, her babies, Persephone and Azrael; Angel, Maria and her daughter Erykah for all their caring towards Marina who considered them her grandchildren.
Also thank you to the nurses and social workers from Ambercare who were so caring of Marina. And much appreciation to Debbie Snyder for her support and kindness to the family. Thank you also to Doug Nava for the great weekly dinners and scrumptious desserts.
She was faithful to God and her Roman Catholic Religion, a devoted parishioner of Santa Maria de La Paz, and loved donating and baking the big Wedding Cake for the yearly celebration of Wedding Anniversaries in the Parish. And of course attending the Novena Masses of Our Lady of La Conquistadora.
Marina will be deeply missed as she was a second mother to her sisters, working alongside their Mother. She was a gentle loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to the Gurule, Nava and Griego families, and also to their friends who they brought to meet her.
We all strive to be emulated with her integrity, beauty, compassion, passion for life, kindness, patience, generosity, strength and be as respectful as she was.
A celebration of her life will be on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Santa Maria de la Paz. The rosary will be said at 1:30 p.m. and the mass at 2:00 p.m. Due to the Covid-19, attendance is limited to 200 people, masks must be worn. Funeral mass will be live streamed on Santa Maria del la Paz website. Interment will be at Rosario cemetery following the funeral mass.
