Reverend Marion J. Hammond, died on May 28th in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was 93. Father Hammond was a loving husband of 69 years to Opal, who passed in 2019. He served 12 years as rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Cortez, Colorado and then rector for 25 years at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Denver. He was a member of the Denver Public School Board (1977-1983) and was a critical part of the Denver’s civil rights movement in the 1960s and early 70s. Father Hammond and Opal traveled the world and loved it: experiencing events such as a private audience with Mother Theresa, a one-year residence in Italy and many tours throughout the world. Father and Opal built their primary homes in Santa Fe and Denver. He (and Opal) will be terribly missed.
Father Hammond is survived by his children: Chris, Martha, Steve, Tim and Dave. Grandchildren Natalie, Mike, Drew, Amber, Marcus, Jeremy, Emily, Wade and Annika. He was blessed with 6 great grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2201 Dexter Street, Denver, Colorado on July 11 at 2:00 followed by a reception in the church hall.
