Matthew Michael Jonathan Herrera

August 28th, 1978-September 16th, 2022

Matthew Herrera, 44, was called home to heaven unexpectedly on Friday, September 16th, 2022.  Matthew was born and raised in Santa Fe, NM.  He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Rose and Joe E. Montez, his father, Norberto G. Herrera, and beloved uncle Patrick Montez.

Matthew was a gift to the world and to all those who knew him.  He was a quiet man with deep faith, a love of animals, fishing, music, the Denver Broncos, and his children.  He was an amazing home chef, and an extremely talented artist.  He was a gifted woodworker starting at an early age by helping and learning from his grandfather.  His talent only increased as he grew older.  Matthew’s art and woodwork often reflected his deep faith.  Matthew had a peaceful, gentle spirit, a shy smile, a great sense of humor and was always ready to help those in need.  He made friends everywhere he went.  He was the type of person who stayed in touch with his kindergarten best friends and made many more deep friendships along the path of his life.  He was a devout father to his children, and a loving and supportive brother and son.

He is survived by his mother, Theresa Montez; his children: Isaiah Herrera, Zachariah Herrera, and Hanaiyah Herrera; sisters: Montessa Valdez (Kelly), and Margaret Colette Herrera; niece Shay Valdez, nephew, Dominic Valdez; Laura Atkins; and numerous friends and family, including childhood best friends: Lenny Roybal and John Hayes.

A public viewing will begin at 6:30pm, followed by the Holy Rosary at 7:00pm on Monday, September 26th, 2022 at Rivera Family Kiva Chapel of Light.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Rosario Cemetery at 1:00pm.  Serving as Pallbearers will be Isaiah Herrera, Zachariah Herrera, Lenny Roybal, John Hayes, Dominic Valdez, and Marc Montez.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Hanaiyah Herrera, Shay Valdez, and David Rubio.
