May Harrover died January 6 at Taos Retirement Village at age 101. May had been a resident of Taos since 1952, coming here after living in Innsbruck, Austria, and Paris after World War II. As a young woman May skied the Austrian Alps and bicycled all over Paris. May studied economics at Stanford University. She worked on the Navajo Reservation on a federal grant, then studied at Smith College for her MSW in Sociology. She then worked in Taos in the Welfare Department. May taught social work at Highlands University until her retirement. She is survived by her son Steve Harrover of San Francisco, CA, her granddaughter Caroline Harrover of Vienna, VA, and her two great-grandchildren Abigail May Small and Clifford Jamison Small. May will be remembered by all who knew her for her intellect, her humor, her consistent championing of the underdog, and her profound love of the outdoors. Her passing is a great loss to her friends and neighbors and to the community.
